Two slices of bread, usually whole wheat or marble rye;
a thorough smattering of plant-based mayo mixed with mustard;
three slices of some plant-based roast beef substitute;
one slice of dairy-free, Gouda-flavored cheese
which I’m fairly certain is made with nuts;
these are the makings of most of my lunch,
and though I eat meat every now and then
I’m trying real hard to give it up.
It’s tough when I’m offered food by friends,
’cause I won’t look a gift horse in the mouth.
Though maybe I should learn the lesson of Troy,
lest my equine present become a gift hearse.
