Litanies Against Dying, 24 (206.)

I wanted coffee around midnight
so I made myself a cup.
This led me to the kitchen, and I
wanted to make tomorrow’s lunch
in advance
so I made a sandwich too.
This led me to the bread, and I
often think of how I eat
only a little,
relatively speaking,
so I popped a slice of the good stuff
into the toaster.
Oh, it’s the bee’s knees –
the sure crunch of toast,
the sweet kiss of jelly,
the warm embrace of coffee –
if not for the caffeine,
I would surely
swoon right here.
